A CANDLE factory which employs 175 workers is up for sale.

Staff at the Colony Gift Corporation in Lindal were told yesterday that American owner Blyth Incorporated is selling off all its European home fragrance and candles companies.

A second big Barrow candle factory owned by Blyth Inc at Sandsale, CCW Ltd, is not affected and will continue as part of the US group.

It makes a different type of candles, sold via PartyLite house parties. There is speculation that one firm interested in buying Colony is Europe’s biggest wax maker CSS of Turin.

It owns Price’s, which supplies dinner candles to the Royal Family, but whose candles are all now made in Italy.

Despite being up for sale, bosses of the 26-year-old Colony company were upbeat.

Colony managing director Louise McMahon said: "We don't want any scaremongering because it is business as usual for us.

"There is nothing that I am aware of that is going to change at Lindal because we are being sold.

"A number of people are looking to buy us."

Colony was founded by Alan, Sue and Jill Williams, who sold it in 2001.

The trio were tragically killed in a plane crash in Africa last year. "

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If you're an eBay seller, you may be paying more than you have to in taxes because you haven't really focused on all that you can deduct.

Bubble wrap? Check. That digital camera you use to photograph your wares? Check.

Car trips back and forth to the post office? Check. Refund once you've figured it all out? Big check, possibly.

Some 2.2 million people run eBay businesses, and most of them are small part-time side projects, according to Rupesh Shah, a TurboTax product manager.

Their owners are so in the dark about the accounting and tax side of their businesses that his company, Intuit, created a special TurboTax product and a Web site (http://www.taxcenter.turbotax.com) just for them.

It's a useful site, even if you don't buy the tax prep software. It includes a list of deductions for eBay sellers, discussions of important tax questions like "hobby or business?" and explains the finer points of home office deductions. It even allows you a free question -- answered by a tax expert with special knowledge of the online selling business.

Should you buy the software? At $60, TurboTax Personal and Business for eBay Sellers costs about the same as the more generic version of TurboTax. And, yes, it's deductible.

"It saved me a ton of time," says Dan Schuessler, a Sacramento Intel employee who sells shoes on eBay. "It walked me through the complicated process for getting a home office deduction, so I didn't have to do it myself."

You can go to the site and do your taxes and decide after you've completed them whether you want to pay for the program and file your taxes. If you've already filed your 2005 taxes, you could use your newfound knowledge to see whether you left a lot of cash on the table.

If so, you could file an amended return for 2006. If not, you could wait for next year and buy the eBay version instead of the regular TurboTax product at tax time 2007.

It may be late for your 2005 tax picture, but it's early enough to make sure you do things right for 2006.

Here are some financial tips, from Intuit and elsewhere, for online sellers.

-- Be as businesslike as possible. If you run your online selling business in a businesslike manner with an intent to profit, you can take deductions for business use of your home and also grab every other deduction you have coming to you, even if it produces a loss that reduces the taxes you owe on your day-job income.

-- Familiarize yourself with the categories of deductions on the Schedule C, which is the form most small independent businesses must file. Use TurboTax's laundry list of deductions to see what kinds of items you should be tracking all year.

-- Set up your records now, using a system that tracks those categories. You could do this as simply as setting up an accordion folder with a separate section for each category of receipts. Or you could use computer-based budgeting software, like Microsoft Money or Quicken, and set up the categories to relate to your business categories.

-- Document. Those car trips and other business travel expenses should have your specific business purpose documented, so keep a log in your car and write yourself notes during your travels.

-- Don't forget retirement! Even if you have a day job with a 401(k) plan, you're allowed to set up another plan for your Internet business. Get advice or read up on whether you'd be better off with a SEP IRA, a solo 401(k) or even a defined pension plan. Then feed it with eBay earnings that can accumulate tax deferred until you use the money in retirement.

-- Study your records to build a better business. It's not just about taxes, of course, but fun and profit. If your records show that you're spending more than you thought on boxes, tape, advertising and shopping, maybe your business isn't profitable, and you need to rethink the way you run it.

Maybe you'll see that you are selling some products for much bigger profits than others. If that is the case, adjust what you do and keep at it.

Before you know it, you could be quitting that day job altogether.

FRANKFURT (AFX) - Ebay Inc plans to introduce a new Ebay Express service that will allow corporations to sell goods via the Ebay sales platform, WirtschaftsWoche reported citing the head of its German operations, Stefan Gross-Selbeck.

Ebay Express differs from the standard Ebay service because all the products it will offer for sale come from the original manufacturer.

The online auction house will launch the service within the coming weeks in the US. Ebay's German operations will launch Ebay Express this autumn.

SHANGHAI: The China unit of online auctioneer eBay Inc has formed an alliance with one of the nation's biggest retailers in a bid to gain more traction with mainstream Chinese shoppers, it said.

Under the alliance, eBay will set up an online store for Paradise Electronics Retail Ltd, one of China's top consumer electronics retailers and a well known consumer brand known locally as Yongle, a spokeswoman said.

The alliance is one of many recent ones announced by eBay's China division, but is also one of the first with a major bricks-and-mortar retailer, in a nod to the fact that many Chinese still do not feel comfortable about shopping online.

A Paradise spokesman said the company saw the alliance as another sales channel to add to its system.

An eBay China spokeswoman said the deal would let it expand beyond its traditional focus of hosting small sellers, often individuals who set up shops on its site.

"The Paradise deal marks the first time we have attracted a business this big to our network," she said.

She said that many consumers were still concerned about buying merchandise over the Internet due to issues like product quality and security of payments.

Thus the Paradise deal was designed to boost buyer confidence, she said, adding that the retailer would initially sell cellphones on eBay's China site, and later add other products depending on market conditions.

eBay was the first to the China online auctions market, entering through its purchase of industry leader EachNet for $US180 million ($NZ301.6 million) earlier this decade.

But the company was losing steady share to upstart rival, Yahoo-backed Alibaba.com, which was attracting users by offering online auction services through its Taobao service for free while eBay was charging fees.

But eBay recently eliminated many of those fees to be more competitive, and said earlier this month it believed it was winning back share.

Over the last ten months I have been able to create a supplemental income from eBay. I was able to reach Powerseller status within the first six months. How was this done? I achieved this through being accurate and consistent in all my dealings. In this post I will deal with accuracy in the eBay market.

I found early on that if one wants to build a successful income on eBay, I had to be accurate in my listings. My main inventory is shoes (both new and gently worn). My listings are not long, but they are accurate. In order to get positive feedback, which is gold to an eBay seller, my listings must contain thorough descriptions of each pair of shoes. If a shoe is in good condition, but has some sole smoothing, state the condition. The bidders want and need this information in order to accurately discern what they are willing to pay for a pair of previously worn shoes. Remember accuracy will only help your eBay business to grow, and will keep your customers returning for more.
